Abstract:
The suid assemblage of Rudabánya, early Late Miocene of Hungary, includes two suid taxa: a primitive species of tetraconodont, Parachleuastochoerus kretzoii n. sp. and the primitive suine Propotamochoerus palaeochoerus. Parachleuastochoerus kretzoii differs from the MN9 form from Can Llobateres, P. crusafonti, a smaller species with narrower cheek teeth than P. kretzoii as well as from Conohyus huenermanni, which is most likely a small, late species of the European Conohyus lineage as originally proposed by Heissig (1989). The Rudabánya Propotamochoerus palaeochoerus is both quantitatively and qualitatively the same species as is found in Germany and Spain; recognition of Schmidt-Kittler's genus Korynochoerus for this species, as proposed by Kretzoi et al. (1976), should be seriously considered.
