Abstract:
Renewed excavations of the sediments from the caves "Feldhofer Kirche" and "Kleine Feldhofer Grotte" in the Neander Valley during 1997 and 2000 yielded the first cultural remains from the Neanderthal type site. The artefacts found are Gravettian and Micoquian forms. In addition, bones belonging to the Neanderthal type specimen and bones which could be assigned to a second Neanderthal individual were recovered. The results of mitochondrial DNA analyses using mtDNA from both specimens support the Out of Africa-model and do not indicate a contribution of Neanderthal DNA to the modern human gene pool. Radiocarbon measurements date Neanderthal 1 and Neanderthal 2, and the corresponding mtDNA sequences, to ca. 40 000 years BP and consequently to Oxygene Isotope Stage 3.
