AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, DEPARTMENT OF MAMMALOGY

This database includes data for all cataloged specimens housed in the Herpetology, Ichthyology and Mammalogy collections. It incorporates records for Ornithology's entire tissue collection, approximately one-third of their skin collection and subsets of their skeleton and fluid collections.

ANCIENT HUMAN OCCUPATION OF BRITAIN (AHOB)

The Ancient Human Occupation of Britain (AHOB) is a three-phase project to investigate ancient humans from Palaeolithic and Mesolithic northern Europe and their dispersal, funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

ARACHNE

Arachne is the central object database of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and the Archaeological Institute of the University of Cologne. Arachne is intended to provide archaeologists and classicists with a free web research tool for quickly searching hundreds of thousands of records on objects and their attributes.

ARCHAEOLOGY DATA SERVICE (ADS)

The Archaeology Data Service supports research, learning and teaching with freely available, high quality and dependable digital resources. It does this by preserving digital data in the long term, and by promoting and disseminating a broad range of data in archaeology. The ADS promotes good practice in the use of digital data in archaeology, it provides technical advice to the research community, and supports the deployment of digital technologies.

BIBLIOGRAPHY OF AFRICAN CAINOZOIC CONTINENTAL MACROPALAEONTOLOGY

CIFEG is a state-approved foundation in the field created in 1981 shortly after the success of the International Geological Congress in Paris. It contains a bibliography compiled by Martin Pickford, accompanied by stratigraphic tables and maps of site locations

BIODIVERSITY INFORMATION STANDARDS (DARWIN CORE)

A uniform standard designed to facilitate the exchange of information about the geographic occurrence of species and the existence of specimens in collections, with extensions for palaeontology.

DATABASE OF TOOTH MORPHOLOGY, INSTITUTE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI (MORPHO BROWSER)

The 'MorphoBrowser' database and interface is a 3D visualisation and searching tool for mammalian teeth, accessible over the web. It allows the user to 'browse' through the diverse range of tooth morphologies found in mammals, both extinct and extant. While browsing, the three-dimensional shape of the teeth can be viewed from any direction by rotating and scaling the tooth.

DENTAL MICROWEAR - DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS

Dental microwear is the study of the microscopic scratches and pits that form on a tooth's surface as the result of its use. Much of the dental microwear research that has been conducted thus far has focused on humans and non-human primates. These can be used as models to reconstruct diets in human ancestors and other fossil primates. This database offers data on microwear, especially of primates, for dietary reconstruction. An account is required to access the database.

DEUTSCHE DIGITALE BIBLIOTHEK

The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek provides acces to books, pictures and notes from your home computer. As a central national portal the project is intended to link the digital offers of approximately 30.000 cultural and scientific institutions. The ambitious aim: to provide access to the cultural heritage of the nation to all citizens.

DIGITAL @RCHIVE OF FOSSIL HOMINOIDS

The database was established to facilitate morphological investigations in the field of human evolution by providing digital data for the international scientific community. The media (CD or DVD) contain digital data (mostly CT scans, in some cases micro-CT scans and surface scans) in different formats, pictures of the original and the virtual fossil, movies, references, links, and an introduction into Virtual Anthropology.#

DISTRIBUTED GENERIC INFORMATION RETRIEVAL (DiGIR)

This software system facilitates the linking of distinct databases through a portal. It uses the Darwin Core 2.0 format as its metadata standard for data exchange.

eFOSSILS

eFossils is a collaborative website in which users can explore important fossil localities and browse the fossil digital library. Funding for eFossils was provided by the Longhorn Innovation Fund for Technology (LIFT) Award from the Research & Educational Technology Committee (R&E) of the IT governance structure at The University of Texas at Austin.

The Encyclopedia of Life brings together information about all life on earth - text, images, video, sounds, maps, classifications and more - all freely available online.

EUROPEAN PREHISTORIC ART (EUROPREART)

EuroPreArt aims to establish a lasting data-base of European prehistoric art documentation, to launch the base of an European institutional network devoted to this domain, and to contribute to the awareness of the diversity and richness of European Prehistoric Art, as one of the oldest artistic expression of Humankind.

EVAN SOCIETY E.V.

EVAN-Society e.V. is a non-profit organisation founded by EVAN members to further promote the goals of Virtual Anthropology in Europe and worldwide. The EVAN Archive contains several hundred 3D datasets of extant hominoids that are accessible for members.

EVOLUTION OF TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS (ETE) DATABASE

The Evolution of Terrestrial Ecosystems Program (ETE) at the National Museum of Natural History investigates Earth's land biotas throughout their 400 million year history. The ETE relational database is now partially united with the Palaeobiology Database Project's (PBDB) relational database. All primary database functions (queries, entries and updates) are available through the PBDB home page. The new combined database compiles information from the terrestrial and marine record, but lacks some of the data fields present in the original ETE database.

KUPRI Digital Morphology Museum

The KUPRI Digital Morphology Museum provides an environment in which you can readily examine skeletal anatomy using the Primate Research Institute's collection of CT and MRI tomography scans. The goal of this site is to enable you to view the scans of non-human primates and mammals and to download scan data from our database for your original research.

LATEGLACIAL

Lateglacial is an interactive, open-access online data repository and geographic research tool for the Late Glacial period of northern Europe. The database currently contains information on those localities that have yielded remains from the Late Glacial period, and is centred on Denmark.

MAMMAL NETWORKED INFORMATION SYSTEM (MaNIS)

With support from the National Science Foundation, seventeen North American institutions and their collaborators developed the Mammal Networked Information System. The original objectives of MaNIS were to 1) facilitate open access to combined specimen data from a web browser, 2) enhance the value of specimen collections, 3) conserve curatorial resources, and 4) use a design paradigm that can be easily adopted by other disciplines with similar needs.

NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL DATABASE (NADB)

The National Archaeological Database is a computerised communications network for the archaeological and historic preservation community. It was established to improve access to information on archaeological activities nationwide. This internationally recognised resource is maintained through a cooperative agreement between NPS and the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST) at the University of Arkansas.

NATIONAL EVOLUTIONARY SYNTHESIS CENTER (NESCent)

The National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) is a nonprofit science centre dedicated to cross-disciplinary research in evolution. NESCent promotes the synthesis of information, concepts and knowledge to address significant, emerging, or novel questions in evolutionary science and its applications.

NEOGENE OLD WORLD MAMMALS (NOW)

The NOW (New and Old Worlds) fossil mammal database contains information mainly about Eurasian Miocene to Pleistocene land mammal taxa and localities. The emphasis of the database has been on the European Miocene and Pliocene but African localities are currently being added and updated, and North American localities will also be visible to the public in 2014. The temporal scale is also currently becoming wider, with both Pleistocene and Paleogene localities being added into the database.

ONLINE REPOSITORY OF FOSSILS (UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN)

Analyses of fossil material require detailed information on the 3-dimensional shapes of specimens. Traditional means of conveying this information through photographs and drawings work well to a point, but can now be supplemented by 3D graphics formats that allow onscreen manipulation of 3D digital models. This website, still in early stages of development, is intended as a resource and showcase for 3D (and supporting 2D) content featuring specimens in UMMP collections or being studied by UMMP personnel.

OXFORD UNIVERSITY MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

Searchable databases are now available for all geological time periods. Together, these give details of all catalogued material in the geological collections, a total of nearly 200,000 specimens. There is also a separate database of type, figured and cited specimens.

THE PALEOBIOLOGY DATABASE

The Paleobiology Database seeks to provide researchers and the public with information about the entire fossil record. It has expanded continuously since 2000 thanks to the efforts of 304 paleontologists from around the world.

PALEOPORTAL - THE PALEONTOLOGY PORTAL

Allows searches of multiple museum specimen databases through a single entry point, plus many other features, including a fossil gallery and a map situating famous flora and fauna localities.

PRIMATE MORPHOLOGY ONLINE DATABASE (PRIMO)

The database includes collection data on each of nearly 5000 included individuals, such as institution and collection number, geographic data on collection locality (country, province and usually latitude & longitude), sex and mass when known. Datatypes include scalar (linear) caliper measurements taken by Delson and his students and colleagues (as well as selected data transcribed from the published literature) on dentition, skull and postcranial elements; 3D data from Microscribe digitizers and laser scanners on crania, mandibles and postcrania. Digital imagery is planned for future inclusion. The majority of the data are derived from extant and fossil cercopithecids, with smaller samples of extant hominoids, with fossils to come.

REVEALING HUMAN ORIGINS INITIATIVE (RHOI)SPECIMEN DATABASE

The RHOI is a collaboration of paleoanthropological and related projects studying Late Miocene (and Pliocene) hominins and other faunas in context. The database includes individual specimens collected by member projects and can be searched by taxonomic, geological, project or collection keywords. Most specimens include digital imagery, along with information on age, geology, collection and taxonomy.

ROCK ART PROYECTO ARAM

ARAM is a scientific-technical point of reference, but also a digital graphic corpus (pictures of shelters, environment, rock art motifs, details, VR equirectangular images, 3D models, data files...) that provides an important component for graphical and visual spreading from an accurate scientific base. It has been conceived as a shared space that improves the accessibility of the rock art shelters to scientific community and the rest of the society.

SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

The Turkana Database contains 13,548 published records of fossil vertebrate remains from the Turkana Basin in northern Kenya. This exceptional collection of fossils representing diverse extinct animals of northern Kenya is housed at the National Museums of Kenya (specimens collected mainly between 1963 and 2004).

STAGE THREE PROJECT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE

The Stage Three Project was born at the Institute for Quaternary Research at Cambridge University. It was designed to assess from the current state of our knowledge of the mild middle part of last glacial period whether its climate might have played a role in the extinction of the Neanderthals. The Stage Three Project's two databases, one faunal and the other archaeological, were conceived to be complementary, and indeed were constructed using many of the same sources. Only European archaeological and faunal assemblages which carry absolute determinations (radiocarbon, thermoluminescence, uranium-series, electron-spin resonance, etc.) have been included in the databases.

STONEWATCH

The "StoneWatch-ARAD-Academy e.V." society for the coverage of early prehistoric rock paintings is an association registered in Germany which was founded from a few foresighted, scientific and humanistic thinking people. The database covers cave art from all over the world.

TEPHRABASE

Tephrabase is a database of tephra layers found in Iceland, north-west and northern Europe, Russia and central Mexico. Details on the location, name, age and geochemistry of tephra layers are stored in the database, as well as information about relevant volcanoes and volcanic systems. A comprehensive reference database is also included. A new Laacher See supplementary data collection has been added.

The African Rock Art Digital Archive

The African Rock Art Digital Archive is the largest rock art digital archive in the world. This website brings together the collections of more than 30 institutions and individuals, giving you access to more than 200,000 digital images.

The Lithic Share Project

The project provides a platform that allows the sharing of lithics & associated prehistoric artefacts from around the world. And in doing so, create an unprecedented & comprehensive resource to aid study in this field.

WILSON AND REEDER'S MAMMALS SPECIES OF THE WORLD

Mammal Species of the World is a database of mammalian taxonomy, based upon the 2005 book Mammal Species of the World. A Taxonomic and Geographic Reference (3rd ed) by Don E. Wilson & DeeAnn M. Reeder (eds.). This database can be used as a convenient on-line reference for identifying or verifying recognized scientific names and for taxonomic research. The names are organized in a hierarchy that includes Order, Suborder, Family, Subfamily, Genus, Species and Subspecies.
