Abstract:
Founded in 1934 as the „Institut für Anthropologie und Rassenkunde" the Institute of Physical Anthropology and Human Genetics at Tübingen University developed into a broadly based research and teaching institution up until 1969. During the past 30 years research had increasingly focused on genetics, while human osteology was taught by Dr. Alfred Czarnetzki, the head of the Osteological Collection at the University of Tübingen. With his retirement in February 2002 the bone collection, which includes several important human fossils such as Stetten and Hohlenstein-Stadel and skeletal series from the Neolithic to early modern times, as well as the lectures in classical Physical Anthropology was threatened to be closed and cancelled. An initiative of the Faculty of Geo-Sciences developed an interdisciplinary curriculum on palaeoanthropology including osteological courses, evolutionary theory and human fossil morphology, human and population genetics, histology, functional morphology, primatology and museology. For students of Natural or Geo Sciences cultural history courses are additionally offered . The curriculum which started in Winter 2000/01 is structured in modules, examinations are organised accompanying the studies instead of one cumulative final examination. The Osteological Collection is supported by student volunteers to ensure the opening hours. It will move into new rooms neighbouring the Archaeozoological Department of the Institut für Ur- und Frühgeschichte und Archäologie des Mittelalters in ca. 2004.
