Abstract:
The well known site of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt is characterised by the presence of the northernmost Neanderthal remains, and an exceptionally well preserved fauna associated with bifacially worked lithics and unique Middle Palaeolithic bone tools. These remains accumulated in an arctic setting in an earlier part of the last (Weichsel-)Glacial (Oxygen-Isotope Stages 5-3). The fauna is dominated by adult reindeer (Rangifer tarandus). Analysis of these remains indicated autumn hunting of this species by Middle Palaeolithic hominids. During subsequent processing of the animal carcasses by Neanderthals a focus on primeness of resources was documented; an aspect also known from other domains of Neanderthal behaviour.
