Abstract:

Cueva Negra del Estrecho del Rio Quipar (Black Cave of the River Quípar Gorge) has been the object of systematic excavation annually since 1990. Early finds of six teeth and tWo bones comparable to Neanderthal forms are most likely those ofa Neanderthal forerunner, or "Pre-Neanderthal", such as EuropeanH. heidelbergensis. The sedimentary fill ofthe rockshelter has been found to cover bedrock at a depth of 5 m in a test pit of 1 m2. Over an area of 12 m2 a depth ofbetWeen 2 m and 2.5 m has been excavated so far. Latterly, well-preserved, fresh pa1eontological and Paleolithic remains in a sealed stratigraphical deposit, almost 2 m down, demonstrate contemporaneity betWeen a late Cromerian fauna and an Acheulo-Levalloiso-Mousteroid assemblage that includes both a bifacial component, notably a limestone Acheulian hand-axe, and also small Levalloisian chert flakes. Elsewhere in the site, chert and limestone flakes and fragments with abrupt Mousterian-like edge-retouch have been excavated, as well as informal artifacts, and surface finds of chert and limestone disooidal cores have been made. Small marnmals identified include arvicolid rodents (voles), namely, Allophaiomys chalinei, Mimomys savini, Arvicola cf. deucalion, and Pliomys episcopalis, all ofwhich had become extinct by mid-Middle Pleistocene times in westem Europe, as well as tWo other descendants of Allophaiomys, namely, Microtus brecciensis brecciensis and Terricola (Pitvmvs) huescarensis huescarensis.
