The Paleoanthropology Society was founded in 1992. It recognizes that paleoanthropology is multidisciplinary in nature and the organization's central goal is to bring together physical anthropologists, archaeologists, paleontologists, geologists and a range of other researchers whose work has the potential to shed light on hominid behavioral and biological evolution.
The Society's primary activity is to hold an annual meeting at which papers are presented. This venue allows paleoanthropologists and those interested in paleoanthropology to interact extensively and share information. The Society has three officers: a president (John Yellen), a treasurer (Alison Brooks) and a secretary (Eric Delson).
The Society meets in conjunction with the annual meetings of either the Society for American Archaeology (even numbered years) or the American Association of Physical Anthropologists (odd numbered years). The meetings take place in late March or April and last two days. All papers are presented either as posters or in single non-concurrent plenary sessions.
